Greyhound Patron Saint Passes Away...

The world is a sad place today because of the passing of Joan Aida Newton of Wilmington, North Carolina. Joan and Lou Newton were the founders of Greyhounds of Distinction, an organization dedicated to the saving of greyhound racing dogs.

For many years their home was a loving and safe place for many of these gentle dogs. Joan and Lou gave of their resources, time and space to help the cause. Joan was always available to help with important medical information that she would gather in from reliable sources.

She would never, ever tell one that she was to busy to answer questions. needless to say, joan was a dedicated part of the anti-greyhound racing movement. she knew well what these greyhound dogs endured on the track. I personally shared precious experiences with them when Joan and Lou would get into their vehicle along with their greyhounds to attend many of the annual greyhound walks/reunions that we held in Vermont and New Hampshire during past years.

They carried, with pride and glory, their beautiful navy blue banner reading," Greyhounds of Distinction-North Carolina " in our parades. We recently laughed when remembering one of these events that had been held in Brattleboro, Vermont. We were doused and pelted with driving rain and wind, but it did not stop any of us, nor end the parade. Garbage bags made for great cover for both dogs and their people.

Father Al Dash, Joan's priest, in his email to SAVE THE GREYHOUND DOGS! hopes that Joan will now meet up with her greyhounds that have left her.

My heart is heavy with pain, knowing that we have lost Joan, but I too, can see her as she crosses that famous rainbow bridge and is kissed by all those beautiful, loving, long, needle-nosed greyhounds who were so blessed to have been a great part of her life.

Rest in peace dear Joan. You will be missed terribly.
